Half a Day With the Brain

    ONLINE COURSE Saturday November 14th from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm (EST, Quebec, Canada) Target Audience: Anybody who wants to know more or refresh EEG comprehension. RACE APPROVED FOR 3 CREDITS* * To obtain the credits, the participants will have 10 days to complete the exam after the course with a minimum score of 60% FEES Residents / Interns / Students: 60$CAD ( ~ 37EUR and 43USD) Others:  110CAD ( ~ 68EUR and 80USD)       SUMMARY Now in its third edition, the course explores the role of electroencephalographic (EEG) evaluation in anesthesia and its expanding applications. It is intended for veterinary anesthesia residents but is also open to anyone seeking to refresh their EEG knowledge. Following an initial theoretical section, the final session will focus on the practical application of EEG. RACE APPROVED LEARNING OBJECTIVES  Understand the fundamental principles of electroencephalography (EEG) and its key parameters used to assess depth of anaesthesia (DoA). Get introduced to the interpretation of EEG-derived indicators in the context of veterinary anaesthesia. COURSE DIRECTOR  Alessandro Mirra   Dr Alessandro Mirra is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Université de Montréal (Canada), and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA). His primary research focus is EEG in veterinary anesthesia, particularly the characterization of EEG changes associated with depth of anesthesia and nociception. Building on his PhD and postdoctoral research in this field, his current work focuses on developing and refining EEG-based approaches for neuromonitoring and their translation into clinical veterinary practice. COURSE INSTRUCTORS  Thomas Parmentier   Dr Thomas Parmentier is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Université de Montréal (Canada), and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Neurology). His research focuses on brain development, cellular and molecular neuroscience, and veterinary neurology, with expertise in stem cell biology, calcium imaging, and electrophysiology. His research focuses on veterinary anesthesia, analgesia, and the assessment of anesthetic depth. A particular area of his work is the use of EEG and EEG-derived variables to characterize sedation and depth of anesthesia in veterinary patients. His research focuses on EEG during general anesthesia in human patients and on the neurophysiological changes associated with anesthetic-induced alterations in consciousness. He has particular expertise in EEG signal analysis and spectral interpretation and has contributed extensively to the development and clinical interpretation of EEG-based brain monitoring during general anesthesia. Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, Bern, Switzerland  Henning Andreas Haga   Dr Henning Andreas Haga is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (Norway), and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA). His PhD research focused on EEG and anesthetic depth in pigs and horses. His academic and clinical work in veterinary anesthesia has continued to explore EEG and its application to the assessment of brain function and anesthetic depth across veterinary species. Department of Companion Animal Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Ås, Norway  Daniela Casoni   Dr Daniela Casoni is Head of the Experimental Surgery Facility at the Experimental Animal Centre, University of Bern (Switzerland), and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA). Her research has addressed nociception and post-procedural acute and chronic pain in experimental and clinical settings. A current focus of her work is understanding the relationship between nociception and depth of anesthesia, including the application of EEG-based monitoring in experimental animals. Experimental Surgery Facility, Experimental Animal Center, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland  Ulrike Auer   Dr Ulrike Auer is member of the Clinical Unit of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Austria). Her research focuses on respiratory physiology during anesthesia and perioperative pain assessment in horses, including automated sensor-based approaches for the detection of discomfort and pain. She also has a specific interest in the development of species-specific EEG indices for the assessment of anesthetic depth. Department of Companion Animals and Horses University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna Vienna, Austria  Carla Pamela Murillo Ramirez   Dr Carla Pamela Murillo Ramirez is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine (IN, USA), and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA). Her clinical and research interests include neuromonitoring of anesthetic depth, locoregional anesthesia, and equine anesthesia.
