FAD | Clinical veterinary genetics

    THEORETICAL COURSE Duration : 1h (recognized by OMVQ) Target audience: open to all DESCRIPTION This continuing education course, in the form of a video conference, introduces you to clinical veterinary genetics , an emerging discipline of relevance to the practicing veterinarian. The logic of genetic diseases is explained, and the Labgenvet web site is presented as a dynamic source of information on the genetic diseases of the dog and cat. The importance of mutation frequencies within a breed is addressed. In addition, the commercialization and direct to consumer marketing of DNA tests for dogs and cats will be considered. This course is presented by Labgenvet, which is a comprehensive website designed to provide veterinarians and breeders with a reliable source of scientific, practical, and accessible information on domestic animal genetics. TOPICS COVERED Advances in dog and cat genetics in the genomic age Genetic tools and resources available and the web site www.Labgenvet.ca Simple genetic diseases of dogs and their breed frequencies The commercialisation of genetic tests for our companion animals Direct to consumer marketing and the role of the veterinarian INSTRUCTOR  David Silversides    Dr. David Silversides graduated in biochemistry and reproductive physiology from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. Since 1990 he has been a professor, researcher and teacher at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Montreal in St-Hyacinthe. For many years he has taught the course on genetics to veterinary students. In 2017, with the contributions of volunteers and students from the first to the fifth year of the veterinary program, he created the Labgenvet website ( www.labgenvet.ca ). This website is a free information resource on pet genetics designed for veterinarians, animal health technicians, and veterinary students, and is also relevant to breeders, pet owners, and even the general public around the world.
